OUR COMMUNITY

The community of North Rustico, located in Prince Edward Island, was incorporated in 1954. North Rustico is located in the Northern part of Queens County, Prince Edward Island. It is 30 km Northwest of Charlottetown. The Name Rustico comes from Rassicot, who was one of the first settlers from France. The community is known to locals, as well as all other Islanders as "The Crick".

The community of North Rustico was founded circa 1790, around a small natural harbour along the Gulf of the St. Lawrence Coast. The region was home to a remnant Acadian population who fled British capture and deportation during the Seven Years' War great upheaval, although English, Scottish and Irish settlers moved into the area during the remainder of the 18th century and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The population of North Rustico is about 600. It became an incorporated municipality in 1954. There are many seasonal homes or cottages owned by non-residents which are occupied for only several weeks or months during the summer. North Rustico’s primary industries are fishing, tourism and agriculture. The fishing industry remains the community's most important economic activity, with approximately 40 vessels home ported in a small craft harbour. Lobster fishing is the main focus for much of the fleet and during May and June fresh Prince Edward Island lobster from the north Shore is available for purchase. North Rustico is quite well known as having one of the best lobster grounds, with some of the most substantial catches of anywhere on the island. In the summer North Rustico Community is one of the Islands most popular destinations. During a warm summer evening, dozens of people come out to enjoy the view while strolling on the village's waterfront boardwalk, which overlooks the bay and fishing docks.

We welcome you to come and visit our community. Sample fresh seafood at one of our restaurants or markets, browse the shops, play in the park, go deep sea fishing, or take a walk along the beach or the boardwalk. These are just a few of the many experiences to enjoy while visiting North Rustico.
